CHAPTER 21

DESPERATE TIMES

“Prizrak, Larry, take Ziegler and lock him in the cargo hold.” Seven said, stomping out of the cockpit. “I want a full-body search done as well. Make sure he doesn’t have anything that can help him get out.”

“What could I possibly-” As Ziegler started to protest, Seven stormed over and slammed his head against the bulkhead of the dropship, just hard enough to shut him up.

“Another word and I’ll use your jaw as a knuckle duster!” Seven stood Ziegler up and shoved him over to Prizrak. The assassin and Larry quickly complied with the Captain’s orders, dragging the German off the Kondor. Seven then sighed and turned to Panzer. “Moses, would you please take these gentlemen to the medbay?”

Panzer nodded, bending down and hefting the two corpses over each of his shoulders. As he walked down the cargo ramp, the heavy paused and turned around. “Is she ok?”

Seven didn’t reply, instead looking over his shoulder at the cockpit doorway. He looked back, shaking his head. Panzer nodded and walked off. When the troop bay was otherwise empty, the Captain took a seat on the ramp and spoke up. “They’re gone, Irvis.”

He watched as the Ska’av medic dragged herself out of the cockpit, a vacancy hidden behind her glasses. Her hands dangled beside her, locked in a twitching, grasping motion. Irvis slowly walked over, placing herself directly on the floor next to Seven. She didn’t look at him as she spoke. “I do not understand.”

“It’s ok.” Seven rested a hand on her shoulder and looked up at her. “You did all you could.”

“I got him killed.”

“No, you tried to save him.”

“I-I-I was hesitant to administer medicine.” She stammered. “My delay-”

“You delayed because you didn’t want to kill him.” Seven’s voice was firm, but not berating. “It wouldn’t have mattered if you gave him medicine in here or back at the apartment.”

“But-”

“Irvis.” Seven pulled her a hair closer so she would turn and face him. “It is no more your fault than it was mine, or Larry’s. He died the moment Ziegler juiced him up with that shit.”

Irvis looked at him, her eyes dampened with sorrow. “Were there others?”

Seven kept himself from looking away. Fuck. He couldn’t lie to her, but he didn’t want her to feel any worse. He took in a deep breath. “There were… A few.”

“We- We must go back!” She tried standing up, but Seven grabbed her wrist.

“And do what?” He spread his arms. “Drag them out just to repeat what happened here with Mitch?”

Irvis pulled her hand away and rose up, the frill on her head flaring out like a sail, “The doctor! I will ask him for-”

“Absolutely not!” Seven stood before her. “That is just asking for disaster. I will talk to him.”

“And what I do?” She shouted. “Prepare corpses for burial?”

Seven paused for a moment, letting the tension in the dropship wind down for a moment. “Can you pull a sample of Chimera from Mitch’s blood?”

Irvis relaxed a touch, adjusting her glasses. “Unlikely, but I can try.
